Work related to sexual and reproductive health and rights has historically been conceptualized and implemented within a binary framework of gender that centers the needs of cisgender women and
men. Through critical interventions by feminist, queer, trans, and gender-diverse activists, the lens of SRHR in recent decades has been broadened to be more inclusive and affirming.
APTN routinely receives queries from trans and gender diverse persons about preparing for, recovering from, and accessing gender-affirming care. As APTN headquarters are based in Thailand, well-known for medical tourism, trans and gender diverse people in the region most commonly look to us for information on:
- Top surgeries for transgender men, transmasculine persons, non-binary, and gender diverse persons, and
- Bottom surgeries for transgender women, transfeminine persons, non-binary, and gender diverse persons.
These are not the only medical procedures available for gender affirmation, but APTN has produced this booklet exclusively to address the most urgent needs on these specific procedures demonstrated by communities in touch with us.
The booklet addresses the lack of fact-checked, culturally sensitive, and politically nuanced information relevant to our lived experiences, and harnesses the wealth of knowledge that has existed in our communities on gender-affirming care through informal and whisper networks for decades. This is a continuation of the work we have done in the past, and the work we are dedicated to continue in the future.
