APTN’s initiatives towards a more inclusive society for trans and gender-diverse people have also achieved much during the year of 2023, such as:
Towards Transformative Health (TTH)
The TTH programme has tackled long-standing deficiencies in healthcare provision for transgender individuals. In collaboration with regional partners, APTN has built resources and networks that focus on inclusive, affirming healthcare. TTH has led capacity-building efforts for healthcare providers, helping reshape healthcare systems toward a more trans-affirmative approach.
Amplifying Trans Advocacy
Through Amplifying Trans Advocacy programme, APTN has empowered trans activists—especially youth—across the Asia Pacific. Training and workshops enhanced their advocacy skills, enabling engagement in key advocacy spaces, including at the United Nations Human Rights Council. This initiative connected grassroots movements to global platforms, amplifying the voices of trans activists on issues of rights and policy reform.
Trans Thrive Project
On the Transgender Day of Visibility (TDOV), APTN launched the Trans Thrive Project to combat transphobic violence. A multilingual survey collected data on transphobic violence, providing a platform for reporting incidents. Key interventions were implemented in India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Pakistan, and Malaysia, coupled with a social media campaign promoting inclusivity and support for trans communities.
Trans and Gender-Diverse Convenings
Trans and Gender-Diverse Convenings provided crucial spaces for networking, capacity building, and solidarity among trans individuals across the region. In 2023, APTN facilitated convenings that focused on sharing best practices and strengthening advocacy and violence prevention efforts.
Transgender Media Alliance
The Transgender Media Alliance aims to collaborate with transgender people from all over Asia Pacific to give them a voice to tell their stories. Through media workshops, APTN has worked with trans influencers and organisations to help shift public discourse toward trans rights and dignity.
APTN’s work in 2023 has been pivotal in advancing trans rights, addressing systemic barriers, and promoting inclusive healthcare and safety across the Asia Pacific. As we move forward, APTN remains committed to creating a more just and equitable future for trans and gender-diverse people.
