For the third day, the fellowship participants spent an entire day on the subject on campaigns, and storytelling. The sessions were carried out by our partners, Tul Pinkeaw and Jarunee J. from SIDEKICK, a behaviour change and advocacy-focused company specialising in strategic communications, advocacy campaign design, and visual storytelling.

The sessions highlighted that campaigning is about building new allies and connections, not just speaking to those who already agree. To do this, campaigners must understand the values and perspectives of different audiences, and find common ground through listening.

Participants also learned how to practice empathy mapping, which is a tool that helps the storytellers gather insights from the campaign audience to stimulate empathy and willingness to support the campaign. This also helps the storytellers understand their audience, and to see the world from someone else’s perspective.

Storytelling was another one of the workshop’s focus – the trainers illustrated how to create a good story for a campaign emphasizing that it isn’t only about success— but it’s also about the journey of overcoming obstacles, which creates empathy and inspires others to join the cause. Fellows also learn to create campaign stories that can resonate more deeply with audiences by balancing fears, hope, and prideFinally, the sessions covered visual storytelling training. Fellows were able to learn how photos can bring messages to life by combining different types of shots—scenes, actions, relationships, portraits, and details—to create an emotional and engaging narrative. At the end of the workshop, participants had an opportunity to work as a group and create an actual campaign using photography to tell the story.
