In a world where transgender individuals often face discrimination, violence, and marginalization, initiatives that amplify their voices and experiences are crucial steps towards progress. The Asia Pacific Transgender Network (APTN) is taking a significant stride in this direction with the grand launch of the Trans Thrive Project. This groundbreaking initiative aims to monitor hate crimes against transgender people across the Asia Pacific region, with a particular focus on Malaysia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and India.
Notably, the launch of the Trans Thrive Project holds additional significance as it coincides with Transgender Day of Visibility (TDOV), celebrated annually on March 31st. TDOV is a day dedicated to celebrating the resilience and achievements of transgender and gender-nonconforming individuals while also raising awareness about the challenges they face globally. By launching the Trans Thrive Project on this important day, APTN not only underscores its commitment to advocating for transgender rights but also sends a powerful message of visibility, empowerment, and solidarity to the transgender community and its allies worldwide.

The Grand Launching of the Trans Thrive Project
The Trans Thrive Project is not just a survey; it presents trans people from all over Asia Pacific with a way to speak up about the injustices and prejudices that they have experienced, and grants transgender and gender non-conforming people the power to make a difference.
At its core, the project provides a platform for transgender individuals to report transphobic incidents they’ve encountered in their daily lives. By collecting this data, the project seeks to achieve several vital objectives:
Advocacy and Awareness: The data collected through the survey will serve as a potent tool for advocacy efforts. By shedding light on the prevalence and nature of transphobic violence and discrimination, advocates can effectively push for policy changes and societal reforms that protect the rights and dignity of transgender individuals.
Understand Trauma & Healing: Through the collection of data, we also seek to understand how transphobic incidents affect the mental health and resilience of transgender and gender-diverse individuals.
Legislative Reform: The Trans Thrive Project aims to use the collected data from the survey to fight for the enactment of transgender-supportive legislation. This includes laws that explicitly prohibit discrimination based on gender identity and ensure legal gender recognition, access to healthcare, employment, and education for transgender individuals.
Understanding the Landscape: Beyond advocacy and legislative reform, the project aims to deepen our understanding of the prevalence and patterns of transphobia across the Asia Pacific region. By analyzing the data collected, we can identify trends, hotspots, and emerging issues, thus informing targeted interventions and support programs.

Launching the new website to access the survey
As part of the grand launch, APTN is unveiling a dedicated website for the Trans Thrive Project. This website serves as a central hub where individuals can learn more about the project, access the survey, and stay updated on its progress and impact. Here’s what you can expect from the website:
About us: Detailed information about the Trans Thrive Project, its objectives, methodology, and partners will be available on the website.
Guide on how to report: The website also provides information on what to expect when filling out the survey. We include details about
Information and Statistics: Understanding transphobia is the first step towards defeating it. We have included brief information of what counts as transphobia, who the perpetrators usually are, and how
Engagement Opportunities: The website isn’t just a passive platform; it’s an interactive space where visitors can engage with the project and contribute to its success. Do help us share our project far and wide, so that we can get as many experiences and stories as possible. Only with your help, can we make this project a success. Additionally, if you’re a counselor or a lawyer, we would love to collaborate with you! Just click on the menu button and send us a message, and we’ll get in touch with you.
How can you get involved?
#TellYourStory: If you have gone through transphobic violence, telling your story is the first step towards healing. With your story, we will be able to map out and understand how transphobia affects legislature, society, and individual behaviors, and from there, we will be able to take steps to minimize its effects.
Spread the Word: Share information about the Trans Thrive Project with your networks, both online and offline. By raising awareness, you can encourage more transgender individuals to participate in the survey and contribute to the project’s success. Through this, we will be able to get a firm grasp of transphobia in Asia Pacific, and be able to find ways to combat it.
Support Trans Communities: Stand in solidarity with transgender communities by advocating for their rights, challenging transphobia wherever you encounter it, and supporting organizations and initiatives that work towards transgender inclusion and empowerment.
As we embark on this transformative journey with the Trans Thrive Project, let us reaffirm our commitment to building a future where every individual, regardless of gender identity, can thrive and live free from discrimination and violence. Together, we can create a more just, equitable, and inclusive world for all.
