Our Health Matters is a community-based research project. The study is led by a transmasculine Steering committee and researchers (trans and non-trans) from Drexel University Dornsife School of Public Health (Philadelphia, USA) and the Population Council (New Delhi). Project partners include TWEET Foundation and Transmen Collective.
The research focuses on transmasculine people’s experiences in society and health care, and how they affect our health and well-being. Topics explored the importance of legal gender recognition, access to healthcare, family and community acceptance, and how those things affect participants’ mental health and general wellbeing.
These results will be shared back with the community and used to advocate for better access to health care and more affirming policies for trans men and transmasculine persons in India.
For the first phase of this project in 2021, the Our Health Matters team conducted 40 in-depth interviews to hear from trans men and transmasculine people in their own words. From November 2022 to January 2023, they conducted a survey to collect quantitative (numeric) data on experiences of over 300 participants. The survey was available online and in-person with trans research staff in select cities.
