Background

Since it was founded in 2009, APTN has grown to become a credible platform and voice for transgender people in Asia and the Pacific, working to ensure that their needs and rights are represented politically, socially, culturally and economically. The network serves as a platform for transgender people to advocate for access to health, legal gender recognition, legislative reform, social justice and human rights and to exchange information and strategies with each other.  

APTN envision a society that upholds, respects, and protects the diversity, safety, equality, and dignity of trans /transgender people, the mission of APTN is to mobilize and advocate for the human rights of trans/transgender people in the Pacific and Asia Region.


The main duties and responsibilities:

Under the broad guidance of the Executive Director and the programmes and advocacy team, assumes primary responsibility for planning, developing and executing communication strategies and APTN efforts to influence and bring about change in the awareness, attitudes, behaviors and policies to advance the rights of trans people. The CO will also be responsible for developing partnerships with other relevant organizations, media and APTN partners  and APTN partners to disseminate information and create awareness of our programs and activities.  The Communications Coordinator will have to work closely with all APTN communications, programs and advocacy team on a daily basis. He/She will maintain close interaction with APTN partners. The Communications Coordinator responsibility includes undertaking of the following tasks:

Main Responsibilities

  • Working closely with the Executive Director, Programs team, Advocacy team to determine strategic communication and advocacy goals for reach and engagement through print media, online and social media
  • Improve overall APTN brand strategy and ensure compliance of activities with partners and stakeholders branding by following donor and APTN guidelines and oversee the APTN public voice maintaining its consistency
  • Maintain APTN’s current portfolio of website, newsletter and social media platforms, collaborating with any additional officers
  • Take the lead in the development, production and coordination of communication materials
  • Collaborate with Executive Director to program annual communications budget according to work plan
  • Supervise any additional staff/consultant in the communications project and ensure the administrative task needed are done
  • Produce quarterly analytical reports
  • Develop social media strategy and improve APTN social media presence using analytic reports that are made quarterly
  • Develop or update communications guideline needed and disseminate it within the team
  • Create partnerships and engage stakeholders linked to the production of communications materials and campaign engagement
  • Outreach to partners, news room, press and media outlets
  • Perform a communication audit and provide capacity building to partners on related matters based on findings from their OCAT assessment
  • Compile communication tools and resources beneficial for partners’ work

Digital Communications:

  • Maintain APTN’s current portfolio of website, newsletter and social media platforms, collaborating with any additional officers
  • With communication objectives in mind, work with advocacy, programs and any other additional staff to determine the development and maintenance of a 12-month editorial calendar for digital communications
  • Develop communication and content strategies for APTN social media.
  • Along with other additional staff, analyze engagement insights quarterly and identify types of creative content across all digital platforms to build awareness and engagement and achieve strategic priorities
  • Monitor and evaluate the impact of communication materials and advocacy events/campaigns to target audiences. 

Campaigns and Production:

  • Collaborating with APTN staff in charge, identify the needs of any public campaign to reach strategic objectives and develop campaign strategy.
  • Develop branding, visual strategy, or creative brief for any campaign, sub-brand and events hosted by APTN
  • Create and maintain good relationships with vendors and consultants needed to produce communications materials
  • Collaborate with Administrative Officer to procure communications logistics (printing and other production)
  • Execute strategy and develop visuals and content when there are no additional staff/resources available.
  • Assist in organizing and generating public support for special events and campaigns to promote strategic goals
  • Collaborate with APTN team and partners to define key issues, messaging and communication channels for public advocacy issues
  • Archive communication materials, including digital, such as publications, press releases and clippings, photographs, audio-visual materials, web resources etc
  • Support organization of workshops, seminars, campaigns, events and project review meetings including the production of event reports and its dissemination
  • Identify production needs to amplify APTN’s publications and research findings and co-develop contents for motion materials


Media and Partnerships:

  • Develop and maintain contact information, materials and relationships with journalists and media outlets (print, TV, radio, web etc.) within and outside of the Asia Pacific region to increase coverage of trans issues
  • Identify media agency, allies in media, and key opinion leaders.
  • Collaborating with APTN staff in charge, identify the needs of dissemination with media, not limited to but can include press conferences or briefings, where media release is needed
  • Undertake all media activities related to a campaign objective
  • Provide coordination of communications to ensure APTN branding guidelines are consistently applied throughout the organisation, stakeholders and partners 
  • Seek platforms, opportunities and partnerships to promote APTN and its priorities and to increase its online fundraising presence
  • Maintaining database of tools, mapping and resources that is available online and include it in the APTN website

Requirements:

Education: University degree and/or equivalent experience in communications, public relations, journalism, or other relevant field

 Work Experience: 

  • Minimum of 5 years of work experience in communications agency, advertising and/or media, journalism;
  • Candidates should be able to work independently – with minimum supervision and guidance from supervisors. Demonstrated and extensive social media experience is an added advantage. 
  • Documented experience working with transgender organizations and/or related issues on human rights
  • Proven experience in coordinating with various stakeholders and production of communication, materials and products and their dissemination
  • Experience of working with community based organisations is highly preferred;
  • Engagement with UN, and other international rights organizations on human rights issues will be an asset
  • Excellent computer skills, including experience managing websites and use of web based content management systems ;
  • Proficiency with social media and writing reports, press releases, joint statements, and speeches 
  • Proven experience in producing the page layout and design of materials such as reports, posters, newsletters, etc would be considered a strong asset
  • Excellent written and oral English communication skills are required. 
  • Coordinating projects that are time-based with regional partners whose first language may not be English
  • Knowledge with design and layout skills and adept in using Adobe photoshop, illustrator, wordpress, video editing software
  • Experience with generating contents for targeted audience
  • Demonstrated and extensive social media or content strategy experience is an added advantage.
